About IYA2009
In 1609, Galileo Galilei first looked through his telescope, and changed science forever. His discoveries provided solid evidence that disproved the prevailing belief that the Earth was the center of the Universe. Organized by the International Astronomical Union, the International Year of Astronomy 2009 honours the first use of an astronomical telescope, and celebrate astronomy and its contributions to society and culture. IYA2009 celebrations are taking place all over the world among 135 countries - locally, regionally, and nationally.
